It’s that time of year when New Year’s Resolutions are abound; the shelves where the skimmed milk once stood are empty, the nursery car-parks are gridlocked as soon as the doors are open, the streets are peppered with folk out running and….well, the daytime TV & radio presenters are full of the news that a third of us will have broken our resolutions within 31 days.
So what can you do to prove them wrong?… How can you make your resolution stick and make 2011 truly a year of change for you? Here are three simple steps to help you give it a good go…
1. Firstly, work out what’s in it for you… why have you made that your resolution? What difference will it make to you? How will your life be better when you achieve it?
2. Now.. what is your resolution exactly? If it’s about being healthier, how much less chocolate will you eat? How much more exercise will you do? What type of exercise will it be? When will you do it? How will you do it? … go on be specific it will really help you achieve it. Once you’ve nailed it down, write it down and put it somewhere you’re going to see it; on the fridge, in your diary, as part of your phone wallpaper…
3. And finally, what’s the first step? Exactly what do you have to do? Who do you need to help you? What do you need to do before you can take that action?… And when are you going to do it? Be specific again; what day? what time? ….And lastly what might stop you taking your first step and what can you do to make sure it doesn’t stop you?
Simples! Yes, it’ll take a bit of time but if it’s a resolution that’s worth keeping then it’s time well invested.
Let me know how you go…. and have a wonderful 2011.
